October Book Haul

For a third month, I have too many books bought to include in my wrap-up. That is, despite my lack of reading. So without further ado, let’s get into it.

Ask the Passengers by A.S. King

13069935 Goodreads | Amazon

“Astrid Jones desperately wants to confide in someone, but her mother’s pushiness and her father’s lack of interest tell her they’re the last people she can trust. Instead, Astrid spends hours lying on the backyard picnic table watching airplanes fly overhead. She doesn’t know the passengers inside, but they’re the only people who won’t judge her when she asks them her most personal questions–like what it means that she’s falling in love with a girl.

As her secret relationship becomes more intense and her friends demand answers, Astrid has nowhere left to turn. She can’t share the truth with anyone except the people at thirty thousand feet, and they don’t even know she’s there. But little does Astrid know just how much even the tiniest connection will affect these strangers’ lives–and her own–for the better.

In this truly original portrayal of a girl struggling to break free of society’s definitions, Printz Honor author A.S. King asks readers to question everything–and offers hope to those who will never stop seeking real love.” – Goodreads

I bought this one from a dollar store, which I haven’t done in a while. I was so excited to see it because A.S. King is one of those authors who I’ve been wanting to read for literally years now. So now I have two of her books and I’m super excited to get into them.

My great-aunt got me this one as a late birthday present (thank you to her!) and its pretty cool because in my leadership class freshman year, we actually studied these habits. Now it’ll be cool to go more in-depth with them.

Second Helpings by Megan McCafferty

9637944 Goodreads | Amazon

“‘Knowing that I’ve just done something that will take decades off my parents’ lives with worry, you’ll excuse me for not getting into the fa-la-la-la-la Yuletide spirit this year… The only difference between Christmas 2001 and Christmas 2000 is that I don’t have a visit from Hope to look forward to. And Bethany has already packed on some major fetal flab. Oh, and now Gladdie doesn’t need to ask a bizillion questions about my boyfriend, because she’s already gotten the dirt from you know who.’

Jessica Darling is up in arms again in this much-anticipated, hilarious sequel to Sloppy Firsts. This time, the hyperobservant, angst-ridden teenager is going through the social and emotional ordeal of her senior year at Pineville High. Not only does the mysterious and oh-so-compelling Marcus Flutie continue to distract Jessica, but her best friend, Hope, still lives in another state, and she can’t seem to escape the clutches of the Clueless Crew, her annoying so-called friends. To top it off, Jessica’s parents won’t get off her butt about choosing a college, and her sister Bethany’s pregnancy is causing a big stir in the Darling household.” – Goodreads

I bought this book from Goodwill because I have a big thing about wanting to have complete series on my shelf. I bought the first book (also from Goodwill) and read it years ago. So now I can go back and reread the first book and finish the series… Or maybe I should wait until I have more because there are five books in this series.

The Absolutely True Story of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie

Heartbreaking, funny, and beautifully written, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which is based on the author’s own experiences, coupled with poignant drawings by Ellen Forney that reflect the character’s art, chronicles the contemporary adolescence of one Native American boy as he attempts to break away from the life he was destined to live.

I also bought this book from Goodwill at the same time as the one before but I got a super cool edition of this! It’s a hardcover that doesn’t have a dust jacket and it comes in a box. I was so amazed by it I just had to get it. So thanks Dad!

Stealing Kevin’s Heart by M. Scott Carter

16245549 Goodreads | Amazon

“Alex Anderson and Kevin Rubenstein are unlikely best friends, but when Kevin dies in a crash, Alex’s grieving upends his life. Banished to a camp for troubled youths, Alex finds his way home thanks to a girl with a secret.” – Goodreads

So I went to Oklahoma Teen Book Con this past weekend (post coming about it soon), and a publishing company (Roadrunner Press) was giving everybody at the convention a free book of one of two choices. I chose this one, because of the cover and two, because my friend read “borderline suicide” on the back.
